Basics of MNsure:

MNsure

MNsure is Minnesota’s official health insurance marketplace. It helps people:

  • Compare and buy health insurance plans
  • Get financial help (like tax credits) to make insurance more affordable

MNsure isn’t an insurance company — it helps you find and sign up for health plans from private insurance companies.

Metal Levels

Health plans on MNsure come in three types: bronze, silver, and gold. These are called metal levels.

They show how you and the plan share costs — they do not represent the quality of care.

  • Gold: Higher monthly payments, but they cover more of your costs when you get care.
  • Silver and Bronze: Lower monthly payments, but you pay more when you get care.
Approximate Costs Bronze Plan Silver Plan Gold Plan
Monthly Premium $ $$ $$$
Cost You Pay $$$$ $$$ $$
Cost Plan Pays 60% 70% 80%

Why Report Income?

MNsure asks about your income to figure out what kind of help you can get:

  • You may get financial help to lower your monthly insurance costs (called tax credits).
  • You might also qualify for cost-sharing reductions to lower things like copays and deductibles.
  • Depending on your income, you may be eligible for free or low-cost insurance through Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare.

In short: Your income helps MNsure match you with the most affordable health coverage.

If MNsure finds that you qualify for Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare, they’ll let you know via mail and give you contact information to follow up. Note: If that happens, Breitenfeldt Group can’t help further—please follow MNsure’s instructions.

How to report income

MNsure will ask for your taxable household income for the year you want coverage, not last year’s income. You may use last year’s income to estimate for the year you need coverage, but you must make a best estimate on your expected income to get the correct amount of financial help. This estimate should be for the entire calendar year (January-December).

Include income for:

  • The person filing taxes (you),
  • Your spouse (only if you file taxes jointly),
  • Tax dependents (even if they don’t need insurance)

Report the following as income:

  • All taxable income
  • Foreign earned income
  • Interest income (even if tax-exempt)
  • Social Security (Title II) benefits

Do not include:

  • Child support
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Worker’s compensation
  • Veteran’s benefits
